American Trans Air (ATA) was a low-cost airline based in Indianapolis, Indiana that operated from 1973 to 2008. ATA primarily served vacation destinations in the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
The airline started as Ambassadair in 1973, offering charter flights to vacation destinations. In 1986, the airline changed its name to American Trans Air and began scheduled passenger service.
ATA operated a fleet of Boeing 737, Lockheed L-1011, and Boeing 757 aircraft. The airline was known for its low fares and no-frills service, catering to budget-conscious travelers.
In 2008, ATA filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations. The airline's assets were ultimately purchased by Southwest Airlines. Today, ATA is remembered as a pioneer in the low-cost carrier market and for its distinctive orange and white livery on its aircraft.
